Why grind a stump rather than leave it.
A stump left in the ground is a trip hazard, a mowing nuisance and, on some species, a source of persistent suckers that keep coming back through the lawn. Left long enough it also becomes a home for honey fungus, which you don't want sitting next to other trees and shrubs.
Grinding is quicker, cheaper and far less disruptive than digging a stump out with a machine — no big excavation, no wrecked lawn, and the surrounding ground stays intact. Once it's ground out you can re-turf, plant something new in the same area or build over it.
